MAX IV, a world-class giant microscope, will be completed in 2015, and ESS, the globe’s most powerful neutron source, will begin construction in 2014. These research laboratories will make it possible for scientists to study in-depth the building blocks of different materials. Together, the investments for these research facilities are equal to those for the Öresund Bridge.

Meanwhile, Lund Northeast Brunnshög, a whole new part of Lund, is planned to be developed close to the research stations. Lund Science Village, the area between MAX IV and ESS, will house university institutions, science facilities, researcher residencies and laboratories, as well as shops, restaurants, cafés and gyms. The idea is to create opportunities for meaningful meetings between local researchers and guest scientists. Studies show that there is a direct connection between fruitful meetings of peer scientists and fruitful research.
Lund Northeast Brunnshög will be the endpoint and a large part of Lund’s Science Road, an area which today is the region’s largest workplace for knowledge-based industries. Altogether, some 40,000 persons are estimated to live and work in the Brunnshög area within 40 years. Lund’s first tram line is planned to go through the area and connect it to the city center.
Within the urban development planning in Brunnshög, ambitions for sustainability are high. Climate change is to be minimized, use of agricultural land balanced, and positive experiences in the public urban space maximized. One unique resource in the Brunnshög area is waste heat from the research laboratories. Large amounts of warm water from their cooling systems will be available for different uses. Besides warming houses, this water can potentially serve to heat greenhouses, outdoor spas or public spaces to encourage winter use.
