The Ecological City of Tomorrow in the Western Harbour, Malmö

This “city within a city” has its own systems for managing its energy supply and waste treatment. Car traffic in the area has been minimized as an environmentally friendly approach to urban planning and mobility.

Following the European Housing Expo of 2001 a team of international architects designed the Bo01 district in the Western Harbour of Malmö focused on “sustainability” in the broadest sense possible. This “city within a city” has its own systems for managing its energy supply and waste treatment. Car traffic in the area has been minimized as an environmentally friendly approach to urban planning and mobility. There are also green roofs on a significant number of buildings with a variety of plants in different colours depending on the season and extensive rain-water run-off systems. Visitors can witness the successful transformation of a previously decaying industrial area into an exciting and sustainable urban environment.

The Aktern heat pump plant forms the core of the energy system. This technology involves the production of heating and cooling with a large heat-pump. The energy is then stored seasonally in natural aquifers below 90-meter deep wells. The electricity needed to power the heat pumps is produced via a local 2 MW wind power plant that also supplies 1,000 flats with electricity. 1,400 m2 of solar collectors are mounted on roofs and walls of buildings in the district, which contribute 15 % of the total heating requirements. The 120 m2 of solar cells used for electricity generation is also a part of the renewable energy system. Modern systems for the collection of different fractions of household waste have been put in place in order to facilitate efficient waste management.

Algae pilot

This Algae pilot is the first of its kind in Sweden. The algae convert unwanted substances to utilities. The goal is that algae cultivation will reduce our emissions of carbon dioxide and purify waste water to minimize over-fertilization of our waters and at the same time produce an energy-rich algae mass that is raw material for biodiesel (algae with high fatty acid content), animal feed (protein-rich algae) etc.

Alsterbro Wastewater Treatment Plant

At Alsterbro sewage treatment plant, wastewater is purified in three steps. The first purification step consists of the mechanical removal of the coarse solids in the rotary screen. The next processing step is the biological treatment in biorotor. In the last purification step, chemical precipitation to remove phosphorous. The flocculant used is polyaluminiumhydroxiklorid.
Then, the treated water out of the Alsterån. Sludge from both the biological and chemical purification pumped into reed beds, where lush reeds contributes to the degradation of the sludge, among others. alia by reed plants favors oxygen supply down in the sludge.

Artificial wetlands in Trosa

Since 2003 the waste water from the town of Trosa (about 4500 citizens) has been treated in artificial wetlands, after the basic treatment in the sewage plant. Thanks to the wetlands the Trosa river and the town bay have been spared from eutrophicating substances (plant nutrients) as well as contagious substances (pathogenes). Besides the value of purifying the water, the wetlands are a popular recreation area. The wetlands are used for education and many study visits are made here. Vagnhärad, the neighbouring town with about 4500 citizens, has a similar area of artificial wetlands since 2001.

Bioendev – The Biocoal Company

Developer and supplier of high-tech systems for cost efficient pre-treatment of biomass for use in heat and power generation, conversion to liquid fuels and production of green chemicals. Based on over ten years of research, BioEndev has developed an innovative torrefaction technology for production of black pellets. With over 10 patents we have a unique technology with high process control and availability. Black pellets resembles fossile coal in many ways but is renewable and carbon neutral. Black pellets are hydrophobic and has up to 50% higher energy density compared to white pellets. Apart from offering Commercial Scale torrefation units together with our EPC partner, Bioendev offers long-term offtake-contracts of Black Pellets in our Industrial Demonstration Plant in Holmsund, Sweden, which has a capacity of 16 000 tons/year. We also offer test batches of Black Pellets for industrial trials as well as tests of different raw materials.

Biogas plant Tuvan, Skellefteå

The municipalty of Skellefteå collect waste from homes and workplaces and produces there own biogasfuell for use in the municipality cars and in the public buses.

Cleaner air in Stockholm with sewage sludge

Two sewage treatment works in Stockholm are producing biogas from sewage sludge. After having purified the gas, it can be used for both heating and vehicle fuel and in addition creates no net emissions of carbon dioxide. Consequently, the treatment works have reduced their amount of emissions and become energy suppliers. Therefore, sewage sludge is no longer an environmental problem, but an important energy resource.
