Falun Energy & Water – Combined bioenergy plant

District heating, district cooling, electricity and wood pellets in a smart combination for the next generation.

Falu Energy & Water produce district heating, district cooling, electricity and wood pellets from clean wood chips and biomass residue from the nearby forest industry. At Västermalmsverket in Falun the energy is locally produced and distributed to local residents. The eletricity produced is equivalent to 80 000 MWh per year.

Over the past years Västermalmsverket has evolved from being solely a combined heat and power plant. By using an absorption cooling machine and a wood pellets factory, Falu Energy & Water has reduced the use of electricity for conventional cooling installations and been able to increase the use of district heating during warmer periods.

The increased use of district heating, when the need for heat otherwise is at it’s lowest, means the combined heat and power plants at Västermalmsverket can produce more renewable electricity. The wood pellets produced is used by nearby industries and in other district heating production units during the winter
