Landfill gas collection in a biocell landfill

Development and improvement of the effectiveness of landfill/biogas collection by improving the isolation of the biocells at the biggest landfill site in Latvia, Getlini, located close to Riga city.

The aim of the project is to further develop and improve the effectiveness of landfill/biogas collection by improving the isolation of the biocells at the biggest landfill site in Latvia, Getlini, located close to Riga city. About 300,000–400,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste is disposed every year in this landfill. Getlini landfill receives waste from Riga city and region. Planned new waste disposal technology in the isolated cells is not yet fully realised. Different disposal techniques and cover materials will be tested and biocells will be arranged with additional water supply. A special piece of equipment for the preparation of the appropriate material for every day covering (using, for example, the ADC Mulch method) will be purchased. As such, the pilot project is unique in the Baltic States since there are no other similar technical solutions applied in other landfills.

Outcome:

The properties of different waste coverage materials have been investigated. The conditions for usage of covered cells for anaerobic pre-treatment of mixed biowaste have been elaborated.

The usage of bioreactor cells with daily covering increases the quantity of gas collected by 2.5 times. At the same time, using the right covering material helps to break down the waste and to minimise odours, reduce the fire hazard, and minimise blowing litter. Leachate production is minimised if waste is covered with an impermeable cover.
