Preschool Takes Holistic Approach to Sustainable and Circular Thinking

Ronneby municipality is investing in Cradle to Cradle® as a method to achieve a circular economy, healthy materials, diversity and renewable energy. The method has been implemented in Hulta preschool, creating an environment of conscious material choices together with a stimulating outdoor environment and teaching.

Cradle to Cradle® (C2C) is a concept that takes a comprehensive and positive approach to all three dimensions of sustainability: environmental, social and economic. It uses a methodology based on a circular economy, healthy materials, diversity, and renewable energy solutions. Hulta preschool in Ronneby has an emphasis on sustainability inspired by Cradle to Cradle®, and its building is certified to Sweden Green Building Council standards.

Selecting safe, sustainable materials

Building materials, furnishings and consumables at Hulta preschool are selected from a non-toxic perspective, using the materials database from SundaHus Miljödata (SundaHus i Linköping AB). An added benefit is that the database lists building materials, which aids future renovation, re-use or even demolition of the building.

Forest instead of traditional playground

The outdoor environment has been created in collaboration with Alnarp’s landscape laboratory at SLU, the Swedish University of Agricultural Science. The design is a forest area instead of a traditional playground, encouraging children’s imagination and interest in nature. Instead of asphalt, the outdoor environment is built with more play-friendly surfacing materials.

Broad collaboration, from science to suppliers

The Cradle to Cradle® methodology has formed the basis for the entire process, from planning and construction to activities and teaching. The whole process has involved collaboration with various parties besides the preschool; from authorities and universities, to consultants and suppliers. Stakeholder analysis, innovation, education and follow-up have been important elements in this.

Early environmental awareness

Sustainable development is an important priority in preschool activities, and the municipality wants to provide children with basic environmental awareness and an understanding of why we should care for our planet, which they are likely to keep throughout their lives. The preschool is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and works with digital development as part of its educational activities.
