The multi activity house – home of sports, activities, and culture

The city of Gällivare is relocating. Public buildings are being replaced, generating a need for smart and innovative multipurpose buildings. The multi activity house in the city center will be the new home of sports, activities, and culture.

A house for all types of activities

The city of Gällivare, located in the arctic region in northern Sweden, is relocating. Buildings in areas affected by the mining industry are either demolished or moved to new locations. Public buildings are being replaced, generating a need for smart and innovative multipurpose buildings. In the city center, a new multi activity house will be constructed.
The multi activity house will be the crown jewel in the center of Gällivare. The 6-story building will house all types of activities for the citizens to enjoy. Activities include black box, swimming pool, training pool with advanced height-adjustable bottom, adventure pool and spa, sports arena, gym, and a climbing wall. Studios for wrestling, ball sports, boxing, weightlifting, and bowling will also be included.
This new addition to Gällivare will be home to more than just sports. The building will be the new home for the Culture School, library, cinema, and youth center. As a complement to these functions the project groups have added creative workshops with studios and makerspace areas – developed to encourage experiments and creativity. The heart of the building offers a light and open architectural volume – a meeting space complete with a restaurant and sitting area.

A complex construction

Built in wood, a renewable resource with low co2 emissions, the multi activity house will become a new landmark in the city. The 6-story building will be the size of a city block, with the different sections being divided by a 100-meter-long indoor street running through the building, connecting the outdoor streets on each side. The building itself is a complex state-of-the-art construction, with an advanced structure and long spans in wood. As the different sections have different requirements for function and logistics, innovative solutions are used to create a building that will last.
The building will house many different activities, that all have unique needs and will impact the structure in different ways. Further, the arctic climate requires the building to withstand long, cold winters while meeting energy requirements and environmental standards. Important aspects that have been considered during the planning process include vibration levels, ventilation, sound proofing, strength and stability, energy efficiency and technical solutions that will facilitate maintenance and use of the building.

Time schedule

When finished, the 21,900 m2 multi activity house will be an important addition to the city of Gällivare. It will be the home of sports, activities, and culture. A large construction site, on a limited area of land in a central location, requires extensive planning and efficient logistics. Construction work will start during 2nd quarter in 2022. Preliminary completion and opening dates are in the end of 2025.
