Gothenburg solves its energy challenges with a combination of previous initiatives and new technology. In Gothenburg, 90 per cent of the city’s apartment buildings are connected to the district heating network.
District heating was first introduced back in the 1950s, today, the city has one of the most well-developed district heating systems in the world and are working with innovative energy solutions for the future energy system. By combining earlier initiatives with new technologies, Gothenburg meets its challenges in the energy area.
Gothenburg’s district heating network is today almost 1,230 kilometers long and 17,000 buildings are connected (90 per cent of apartment buildings).
The district heating system enables us to utilise a large amount of energy that would otherwise dissipate into the atmosphere or the sea. 70 per cent of our district heating
comprises heat recovered from other activities, such as waste incineration and refineries. 19 per cent is renewed energy (for example bio mass) and 11 per cent is fossil energy.
Gothenburg’s municipally owned energy company aims to be fossil free by 2025. One new method will be accumulation tanks for storing heat. With the help of an accumulation tank, energy can be stored that would have otherwise been wasted. The tank works like a thermos and when demand for heating is lower, heat is stored in the tank. The heat is then used when demand is higher, which means that fossil-based heating stations are not needed to the same extent.
