Cellfion, a Swedish startup, is on a mission to revolutionize the hydrogen, battery, and ion-separation industries with sustainable materials. Building on over a decade of research at esteemed institutions like KTH and Linköping University, we develop and produce advanced cellulose-based membranes that are redefining the landscape of electrochemical energy applications.
Our innovative membranes, crafted from cellulose derived from trees, are engineered for diverse technologies, including hydrogen production, batteries, and water treatment. These membranes are vital to the efficiency and performance of these systems, making them indispensable for the future of clean energy.
A major challenge in current membrane technologies is their reliance on “persistent substances” like PFAS, which the European Union plans to phase out in the coming years. This regulatory shift poses a significant disruption risk for the industry—unless new, sustainable alternatives are introduced. That’s where Cellfion comes in. Our cellulose-based membranes offer an environmentally friendly, scalable, and cost-effective solution that meets the industry’s evolving needs.
Our process is innovative yet familiar. Inspired by traditional papermaking, we extract cellulose nanofibrils from wood fiber walls through mechanical treatments, chemically modify them for specific applications, and then press them into high-performance membranes.
With Cellfion, the future of membrane technology is not only sustainable but also transformative, propelling the green energy revolution forward.
