Logistics Cluster Serves as Model for Collaborating on Smart Sustainable Logistics

Logistics Cluster Östergötland is an arena and network for innovation and development in logistics solutions. It allows both businesses and municipalities to engage with a variety of challenges and new ideas for smarter and more sustainable logistics.

Globalisation, environmental challenges, growing cities and increased e-commerce. These are some of the changes in today’s society that make efficient and sustainable logistics more and more important, for business and for cities and regions. To meet this demand, the Swedish region of Östergötland has established a logistics cluster as an arena for innovation and development. It originally started as a project but has now become permanent, and is strategically located at the Port of Norrköping.

Collaboration across businesses and sectors

The cluster aims to be a hub where people can meet across businesses and disciplines to develop new solutions and ideas. Östergötland Logistics Cluster is engaged in a variety of projects, one of which is an expansion of the Port of Norrköping to handle larger volumes of goods. Another project focuses on the urban transformation of cities that need more efficient logistics. A third example is the work of municipalities to attract new companies.

Grocery transport cut by 50%

Logistics Cluster Östergötland has already resulted in several success stories. Better coordination of goods distribution has allowed the Municipality of Norrköping to cut the transportation of groceries by more than 50%, which has both financial and environmental benefits. In addition, all groceries are now transported using trucks that run on either HVO diesel or petrol , and the distribution centres’ energy is generated from solar panels.

What’s more, the region’s first liquid biogas filling station opened in 2019 and a new sustainable logistics centre is due to open in Norrköping to create more sustainable e-commerce flows. These and many other initiatives are important steps towards fossil-free logistics solutions, and also serve as inspirational examples that other cities can learn from.

Logistics Cluster Östergötland is a collaboration that includes Norrköping and Linköping municipalities, Region Östergötland, Linköping University and the Port of Norrköping. The project is financed by Region Östergötland and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Growth in e-commerce is increasing both traffic congestion and CO2 emissions from delivery vehicles.
