Ohboy, the Bicycle House – Built for a Sustainable, Cost-Effective Lifestyle

Ohboy the Bicycle House in Malmö is designed, built and owned by architects Hauschild + Siegel. Owning the process from drawing board to finished product has allowed the architects control the entire concept and ensure it meets their vision of a smarter way to live.

Cykelhuset Ohboy comprises both rental apartments and a long-stay hotel. All apartments are designed for a simple way of life, helping residents achieve a cost-effective lifestyle. Instead of using a large area for car parking, this housing concept wants to encourage residents to either cycle or use public transport. So, instead of space for cars, there are parking spaces for bikes next to the building.

Bike shop in the building

There is also a bike shop, which offers quick repairs, making it convenient for residents and other customers to keep their bikes on the road. Furthermore, all apartments are accessible by bike , even on the eighth floor.

Tropical surroundings

All surfaces of the building are used for greenery. The front features a lush green wall of trees and climbing plants. The small, shady courtyard features tall exotic trees, creating a tropical feeling in the south of Sweden.

Green roofs for biodiversity

The building has a green roof that supports biodiversity. Conifers , small shrubs and herbs share the space with succulents, and the variety of plants creates an area that’s perfect for pollinating insects and birdlife. The bike shop has a water retention roof, with flowering plants and a constant flow of water.

An oasis for people, plants and animals

Cykelhuset Ohboy is an environmental oasis amid a concrete jungle. With its focus on social and environmental sustainability, as well as innovative ideas for a modern, urban and simple lifestyle, this building provides an inspiring example of the smart city of the future.
