This Algae pilot is the first of its kind in Sweden. The algae convert unwanted substances to utilities. The goal is that algae cultivation will reduce our emissions of carbon dioxide and purify waste water to minimize over-fertilization of our waters and at the same time produce an energy-rich algae mass that is raw material for biodiesel (algae with high fatty acid content), animal feed (protein-rich algae) etc.
Climate Friendly Childbirths
Nitrous oxide is used during 80 per cent of childbirths. This gas is a green-house gas 310 times stronger than carbon-dioxide and one kilogram that is emitted into the atmosphere is equivalent to 1500 kilometres of driving a car. Region Skåne, the regional health care management organization of southern Sweden has installed equipment from the company Nordic Gas Cleaning for separating the nitrous oxide into oxygen and nitrogen at all of its five hospitals with birth clinics. This has not only reduced emissions by 99 per cent. It has also improved the work environment for midwives, who previously felt tired and nauseous after inhaling substantial amounts of air contaminated by nitrous oxide. Now both midwives and birth-giving mothers feel better due to this improvement.
CLIRE – Climate Friendly Health and Care
The CLIRE project consists of four sub-projects, each focusing on a particular aspect of health care management with substantial potential for improvement in terms of sustainability and the use of clean technologies and practices. The first three sub-projects are managed by the healthcare management organization of Region Skåne.
Congestion charges in Stockholm
The introduction of congestion charges in Stockholm was one of the reasons why Stockholm was awarded “European Green Capital 2010”. The introduction has led to reduced traffic with somewhere between 20 and 25% and that air quality has been improved, according to the Road Administration.

Innovative Use of Heat-Pumps and Solar Panels
The housing company Karlskronahem has eliminated oil from its heating systems by installing a number of different types of heat-pumps in innovative ways. One installation involves the installation of air-to-water heat pumps in the attic of apartment buildings that supply heat down to an external temperature of five degrees. The air in the ventilation is recycled through the system for heat recovery. The company has also installed solar panels for electricity production in order to become more self sufficient in terms of energy.
