Drottninghög – developing a socially sustainable area

Drottninghög, a neighborhood in Helsingborg, is in the process of developing both a physical and socially sustainable area. Together with the residents, real estate companies and the city of Helsingborg we transform a worn down residential area into an attractive and included part of the city.

Collecting dreams
The project started with a large number of dialogues were we met with one third of the residents in Drottninghög. More than 300 interviews were done with the purpose of listening and collecting wishes, needs and dreams. Since then – dialogue and sustaining relations has been a key factor in developing the residential area together with the residents.

Well connected
Several initiatives has made Drottninghög more connected to the rest of Helsingborg. Firstly, the city of Helsingborg put a lot of resources into making a state of the art playground with a princess and dragons-theme. This has increased the pride of residents living in the district and also resulted in children and their families traveling from other parts of the region to visit the playground which creates a positive flow of people.

Secondly, a major shirt business in Helsingborg decided to build their new head quarter in the residential area – creating the first office space, which also adds to the positive flow of people. Moreover, the city of Helsingborg invested in a new bus transit-solution “The Helsingborg Express” which goes through a large part of the city. This makes the journey from the city center to Drottninghög both faster and easier for residents and visitors.

Placemaking
In Drottninghög many of the public spaces has been developed by/or together with the people living there. For example, the inhabitants run their own urban gardening, supported by the city of Helsingborg. Of course it is open for everyone, both to grow vegetables as well as to join the harvest party.

To summarize
Drottninghögs profile has grown much stronger and a variety of new stakeholders is now engaging in social, environmental and financial engagements. It leads to long lasting changes such as:
• Increased quality of life
• Increase public safety
• Better school results
• Over 300 new employments

Helsingborgshem won the prestigious price “Bopriset” in 2018 with the motivation that they have developed Drottninghög with a great respect for the residents’ conditions and wishes.
