Mobility solutions for a smart city

Smart mobility solutions are an important part of the sustainable city. In Östergötland several innovative solutions can be found including city district design planning for sustainable transports, fleats of cars and bikes, a solution for increased traffic safety and much more.

Sustainable solutions in the city district of Vallastaden
Pioneering within mobility solutions is Vallastaden, a city district built for sustainability. Sustainable transports is central in Vallastaden where cyclists and pedestriants have been in focus when developing the neighbourhood. The idea for the district is a design where driving by car is not always the easiest option. By locating the car parks in the outskirts of the district, a little more effort is required when choosing the car. Cycling, walking and travels with public transport are facilitated by generous bicycle- and footpaths and several bus stops in the neighbourhood.

Mobility as a Service
A simple mobile application which assembles different solutions for sustainable transportation, is the idea of the project “Mobility as a Service”. Today, there is an increasing number of transport services which among other include public transports and fleets of shared cars and bikes. The new application will include several types of transports which enables the user to customize a planned travel. All arrangement of the travel is managed in the application including planning, booking, payment, tickets and real-time information. By combining different types of transports in a simply managed application the city will become more accessible and more fossil free travels can be carried out.

The mobility solutions will include a peer-to-peer-service for leasing of privately owned cars, provided by Ciao Ciao Carsharing. When a car owner joins Ciao Ciao a smart hardware is installed in the car wich enables people nearby to book and unlock the car through Ciao Ciao’s application. A smart and simple way for car sharing! Travels by bike are also easily made in the city of Linköping by using an electric bike from Linebike’s fleet of bikes. In the application the customers can unlock the bikes and then travel between many points in the city, paying a small fee per travel or a fixed cost per month.

Autonomous vehicles and traffic safety
Autonomous vehicles are believed to be an important part of the future’s sustainable cities. Two electrified self-driving buses are now operating at Linköpings university as a part of the research project “Ride the future”. The purpose is to create new knowledge within autonomous vehicles and to investigate how self-driving buses can complement the traditional public transports in order to enable more people to travel by public transports instead of privately-owned vehicles. Smart and safe mobility solutions are keywords in the project.

Edeva is a company located in Linköping that provides an intelligent traffic safety system called Actibump. Actibump leaves the road level for vehicles driving at, or under, the legal speed limit while speeding vehicles activate a hatch, integrated into the road, that lowers a few centimetres creating an inverted speed bump. Actibump is a robust system and despite increasing the road safety and accessibility it lowers emissions and noise.
