Umeå Smart City
In Umeå we are working together with several partners around Europe, but especially with our partner cities Rotterdam and Glasgow, to develop the Smart City. Some characteristics of a smart city is that it is digital and energy efficient. The different technical systems need to be connected and interact with each other, but also the city’s companies, organizations and its people need to connect and interact with each other.
Umeå Wastewater Treatment Plant
Within Umeå municipality there are a total of 19 wastewater treatment plants. The largest, Umeå Wastewater Treatment Plant, takes care of wastewater from households and various businesses in Umeå and surrounding villages. Every year, it receives about 13 million cubic meters of waste water, containing about 3000 tons of organic material and about 80 tonnes of phosphorus. The process of cleaning water demands a lot of energy, but the plant also produce biogas which gives 23 000 kWh per day.
Underground urban farming
Cultivating city bazaars run innovation for sustainable urban development in Helsingborg, Landskrona and Stockholm. The unique cooperation has been developed by a consortium of cities, associations, academics as well as companies with the ambition of providing new, green workplaces and growing companies.
Underground waste management
Thanks to a stationary pneumatic refuse collection system, the garbage doesn’t need to be collected by trucks anymore. Instead, the garbage is transported by air through pipes, where it is compacted in sealed containers. Using a vacuum system instead of an old-fashioned refuse room or waste container does away with problems with unpleasant odours, and nobody needs to come into contact with waste bags or containers.
Waste incineration at Högdalenverket
Högdalenverket, which is one of Europe’s most modern installations for energy extracted from waste, produces electricity and heat from Stockholm’s combustible household waste and industry waste. Högdalenverket is an important component in the district heating network of southern Stockholm.
Waste Management in Practice
In Malmö with its 300,000 inhabitants household waste is collected by the waste management company VA Syd. In the residential area of Augustenborg all fractions of waste are sorted in waste management houses close to residential buildings. In this area, substantial efforts have been made to simplify the sorting of waste and to inform residents about the need to sort waste and thereby participate in the pilot program.
Wetland Park Kalmar Dämme – For a cleaner Baltic Sea
Törnebybäcken, a stream which drains most of the Kalmar countryside just west of Kalmar, is one of the municipality’s most nutrient-loaded water bodies. Kalmar airport contributes to the supply of mainly nitrogen that is used to keep the runways unfrozen.
Through a unique partnership between CAA and Kalmar municipality, a large proportion of mainly nitrogen, but also phosphorus that would otherwise be added to the West Lake (a bay of the Baltic Sea), are deleted in the landscaped wetland park Kalmar Dämme. It is nature’s own treatment plant, where a whole series of natural processes occur that reduce nitrogen and phosphorus.
Wooden bridge Älvsbacka
The Älvsbacka Bridge in Skellefteå is one of many pedestrian bridges constructed by Martinsons since the end of the 1980s.
